William CofC man, alias "St, IxjuIs Fat." wanted to answer for complicity In the murder of Policeman Robinson in San Francisco, January 21, was here yesterday for a few hours In charge of Policemen "Wrenn and Taylor, on his way to San Francisco for trial. Coffman had been arrested in Win nipeg, Canada. As he stepped from the train at the Terminal Depot he was laughing and talking with his captors as if he had been on a picnic, and to re lievo the San Francisco officers, who were tired out with their vigil. Detective Cor dano took charge of the prisoner and conducted him to the city jail until tho time arrived for the train to start. Coff man denied all knowledge of the murder and asserted that ho was not near San Francisco when Policeman Robinson was killed. He declined to state why he had gone to Winnipeg. After tho San Fran cisco men were rested, the prisoner was taken to the depot and again placed on the train. Policeman Taylor, one of Coffman's guards who was shot and ellghtly wounded by the desperadoes when Robinson lost his life, is Just re covering from the effects of his wound and 'Is proud in the possession of the sil ver medal he received for bravery from the Chief of Police of San Francisco. It will be remembered that a few weeks ago "Sermon Hartrodt, alias St. Louis Frank, -was arrested in this city for complicity In the murder of Robinspn, and was also sent to San Francisco for trial. To Abate Public Nuisances. The Lewis and Clark Civic Improvement Asso ciation will meet Tuesday evening in the Mining Bxchange hall in the Chamber of Commerce building. All members and public-spirited citizens are invited to at tend. The subjects of discussion will per tain to the abatement of public nuisances. Final arrangements will be made for the mass meeting to be held Friday evening, April 25, under the auspices of the State Federation of Women's Clubs. Mrs. Conde Hamlin, of St. Paul, will address the meeting at the Exposition building. She is president of the Women's Civic Improvement League of St. Paul, chair man of the Minnesota Federated Com mittee on Town and County Improve ment, and second vice-president of the American League of Civic Improvement. The last-named league has asked the Lewis and Clark Civic Improvement As sociation for a written article on "Port land from a Civic Standpoint." Market Phoject a Go. Tho Co-operative market project of the retail grocers is meeting with success, say its promo ters. Last week one of the promoters was in Astoria soliciting subscriptions to stock. This week he will go to Vancou ver on the same mission. The goal of the promoters is $10,000, which will be the capita of the corporation. That sum is nearly raised, they say, and this month will see the project organized. Whole salers Teport that the new credit system continues to go around like a greased wheel. The only habitual delinquents are Chinese and Italian buyers. Opposi tion to the credit system has largely sub sided, "Retailers have apparently taken more kindly to it since they have seen that it is not aimed at their detriment, but at the advantage of everybody," said a wholesaler yesterday. Stolen Cigars Recovered. Detectives Kerrigan and Snow succeeded yesterday In finding the 2500 cigars recently stolen in front of the store of Lang & Co., First and Ankeny streets. The cigars were stored by the thief In a room on Third street near Burnside, but in the mean time he has left town. STUART COMPANY COMES Ready for Opening; Lons Engage ment at the Baker. The Stuart Company, which will open a 10 weeks' engagement at the Baker The ater, arrived in Portland late Friday night, and all day yesterday they were busy superintending the transfer of their belongings to the theater, whose dressing rooms were soon resplendent with an ar ray of clothing the like of which has never before been seen in the theater. In the company are Ralph Stuart, Lan sing Rowan, Katherine Countess, Eliza beth Stuart Lewis Frohoff, Lewis A. Mor rison, Charles Garrolds, Frank Sheridan, Charles P. Clary and several others. They soon found permanent quarters, and. af ter their belongings had been bestowed at the theater, spent the remainder of the day looking at Portland, which many of them have already seen. Mr. Stuart last played Portland eight years ago when he appeared In Jacob LItt's original production of "In Old Ken tucky." The best thing Miss Rowan ever did here was th wronged girl in "The. The other members of the company have all filled important engagements, and are well known throughout the country. NEWPORT, April 9. (To the Editor.) Within the past six weeks several fine halibut have been caught by parties fish ing from the steamer wharf here. The fish weighed from 45 to 95 pounds. Every year halibut are taken with hook-and line from the waters of Taquina Bay.
