Son Mentioned to Succeed Father. According to the city charter, the Com mon Council is empowered to select a successor for the late A. F. Nichols, who was Councilman of the Tenth "Ward. The subject will come up before the Council at Its meeting Wednesday of this week. The only name mentioned for the place so far Is that of Frank A. Nichols, son of the deceased, who is a druggist of Upper Albina. The Councllmen present at the City Hall yesterday afternoon fa vored the young man, and thought his selection would be a fitting tribute to a worthy and honorable citizen. It is not known whether the son will accept the position if tendered him. Section 22, of the charter, in reference to vacancies in the office of Councilman, says: "In the office of Councilman, by appointment of the Council, to continue until the 1st daj of July, after the next general election." No Mail. Delivert Todat. There will be no delivery at the carriers' window at the postofflce today between the hours of 10 and 11 A. M. Those who have been accustomed to draw out their Sun day letters in this way will save them selves considerable trouble, worry and question-asking If they remember that today Is the day for the letter-carrlerx' excursion to Seaside. The men that han die the mail will be given the whole day off, according to the cubtom in many " the Eastern cities, since the outing comet only once a year. Every Sunday there is an anxious crowd at the carriers win dow waiting fur letters of business, mes sages of pleasure and sadness, or dainty blilel-doux. Today the crowd will gather around the window In vain, If they do, and the suspense will not be broken until Monday morning. Tax on Monet Orders Taken Off. The announcement was made yesterday by Assistant Postmaster Matthews that after July 1 the war tax of 2 cents on each money order would be taken off. In structions to that effect have been re ceived from Washington, D. C, by the Portland postofflce. This reduction will amount to a great deal In the course of a month, and will be welcomed by people who make a regular habit of pur chasing orders from the Government. There was no inconvenience, however, in the collection of the tax by the Gov ernment, as the amount was calculated dl Tectly in the price of the orders, and stamps were not affixed to the orders. Few Calls for Aid. The City Board y of Charities is not troubled much with transient men seeKing aio. tnese auys, as work is abundant, and there is no ex cuse for a htalthy man being hard up. Considerable help is being afforded wom en and children all the time, however, as some of these have been deserted by their lawful supporters, while others are un fortunate in the management of their af fairs, and so need temporary assistance. The secretary thinks he has easy times now, compared to a few years ago, when he had Coxej's Army to take care, of for a period of four months. Improving Second Street. Smyth & Howard have kept a force of men busy on Second street, south of Morrison, the past week, sawing off the ends of side walk planks, in order to make room for the cement curb to be laid previous to paving the street with wood blocks. The old Belgian blocks, forming the gutter oi each side, have been torn up, and the task of leveling for the macadam bed will be commenced this week. The Improve ment Involves a distance of Ave blocks, to Madison street, and will add materially to the appearance and utility of that im portant thoroughfare. No Cheap Strawberries. Housewives who have waited this season for cheap strawberries for putting up have thus far been disappointed, as first-class berries have been no lower than 5 cents a box.! In former years the fruit usually got down to 2 or 3 cents, and then the can ning and bottling would go on by whole sale. Local canneries now take all the surplus, and so strawberries are no longer a drug on the market. The strawberry season is now slowly drawing to a close and so berries will get no cheaper In 190L Society Linnea. The Society Llnnea has elected officers for the ensuing six months as follows: Erik Nelson, chair man; Ida "Wileon, vice-president; Tilda Holm, recording secretary; Samuel Holm, financial secretary: E. Helmer, treasurer; Carrie Olson, master of ceremonies; In grid Swanson, librarian; Andrew Johnson, deputy librarian, and Gustav Anderson, trustee to serve 18 months. Installation of the newly-elected officers will be held next Friday evening. No Quorum. Yesterday afternoon was the regular meeting time of the street committee and health and police commit tee of the City Council. Owing to the non appearance of a sufficient number of mem bers to form a quorum, no meeting was held. The committee will probably get together tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, when the usual routine business previous to the regular Council meeting will be transacted. "Work Begun. Men and teams have be gun the work of excavating at the south, west corner of Sixth and Hoyt streets for a business structure to be erected for Clossett & "Werleln. The building will be a two-story frame, with stone basement, and have a frontage of 100 feet on Sixth street, by 50 on Hoyt. Four stores will front to the eastward and the upper story wlll be used for offices or rooms. Popular Summer Seaside Schedule, re-established by the Astoria &. Columbia River Railroad: Beginning Saturday. July 6, and every Saturday thereafter dur ing the Summer season, the popular I'oru land-Seaside express will leave Union De pot, Portland, at 2:30 P. M., and run through direct, arriving at Astoria at 5:50 P. M.; Gearhart Park, 6:40 P. M., and Seaside. 6:50 P. M.. making direct connec tion at Astoria with the steamer T. J. A carp weighing 18 pounds, and looking big enough to weigh twice as much, was caught at the foot of Stark street yesterday by Petries Bana mo, a Greek, whose name, being trans lated into English, Is plain Peter Brown. The carp was caught with a small hook and line such as one used in fishing for pike and chubs, and a piece of half-boiled potato for bait. He ran out 200 feet of line before he could be checked and broke the line as he was being hauled Into the boat, but Brown did not let him get away. The carp was of the golden variety, hav ing scales all over the body. TheBe scales are nearly square and are an Inch In length and widttf. Brown, who lives on a scow at the foot of Stark street and fishes for a living, says he has seen but one larger carp. He asked 60 cents for his catch, said It was worth 75 cents, but finally accepted 50 cents for It. If two or three carp of 20 pounds or so could be secured they might be worth sending to Buffalo. For the Beaches. Tickets are now on sale at the A. & C. Railroad ticket office, 255 Morrison street, and Union Depot, Portland, to all points on Clatsop Beach, via rail direct, and to all beach points on the I. R. &. N. Co., via the A. & C. R, to Astoria and steamer and rail from Astoria, at the popular beach rate of U for the round trip. All excursion ticket issued by the O. R. & N. Co., "Vancou ver Transportation Co., and Columbia Riv er & Puget Sound Navigation Co., from Portland to Clatsop and North Beaches, will be good to return from Astoria on the trains of the A. & C. R. R. Passen gers desiring to return by rail from North Beach points should take the steamer Nahcotta, leaving Ilwaco in the after- noon passengers going to .worm ueacn points via rail to Astoria can cross the bay from Astoria on the steamer Nah cotta In the morning or the steamer T. This society, which stands for the protection of dumb animals, and which has been supported In its good and beneficent work for more than 20 years by a few persons, through a resolution of Its board of directors on June 1? Is now to begin an active effort to secure members, In order that Its useful ness may be largely Increased. To this end, W. G. Ballard,' an Oregon pioneer of 1852, has been secured to canvass tht city, and It is hoped that the citizens will give him a reception in keeping with the Importance of the work he is to as sist in promoting. Reception to Dr. and Mrs. Lord. The John Burroughs Bird Society will give a reception to Mr. and Mrs. William R. Lord next Tuesday evening In the Uni tarian Church. Mr. Lord, the founder of the society and author of the first book upon the birds of Oregon, is about to leave Portland, to make his home In the East, Friends and lovers of birds are in vited to attend. New Variett of Strawberry. A new variety of strawberry has teen "invented" hv thf resourceful Mr. Macoon. It is a cross between the Timbrel and the cham pion of champions In the berry line, the Magoon. The new berry 1b of the same size as the Timbrel, which Is the parent stock, and has a delicate flavor. It has not yet been named. Many are going to Flavel this year; the best families of Portland are being booked. Hotel complete in every depart ment. Oeorge Beecher, alias Brooks, who was arrested Friday night with Jewelry in his pos session, for which he could not satisfac torily account, is being held to await the Instructions of Chief of Police Sullivan, of San Francisco, who states that Beech er, otherwise known as Russell, is want ed in San Francisco for grand larceny. "I do not know on what charge I am ar rested," said Beecher last night. "The jewelry I had when I was arrested was given me by my girl, who lives In Denver, Colo. I am a waiter by trade and worked four months in a San Francisco restau rant, but I know nothing of a charge of grand larceny against me by a Mrs. Amy Johnston, of that city. I come from Troy, N. Y., and my brother-in-law is a Police Commissioner in a New York town." Bishop Scott Academy. Professor A. C. Newell, one of the best-known of West ern educators, who now has charge of the Bishop Scott Academy, is meeting with gratifying success in his efforts to ex tend the usefulness of the school. The Institution was never in better condition than it is at present, and its prospects were never brighter. Health Officer Men efee,on being Informed that Miss John son, 431 East Morrison street, was strick en with smallpox, removed her to the pest house yesterday. The health wagon, stopping in front of the Chamber of Com merce building on the way over, in order to pick up Mr. Menefee, caused no little excitement, and started the rumor that a case had been discovered among the tenants of the building.
