16 THE SOT1TA.Y OBEGONIAN, PORTLAND, AtTOTSU 19, 1900. I0RPD0ES WON AGAIN JJEFEATED TUB MtnTTFOatAHS BY A SCORE OP lO TO 8, Came Atiotrnflea in Exciting Fea ture, Good and. Bad Flay, Good and Bad Imclc Again the Torpedoes won the ball pain from Multnoznahs, and yesterday after soon before the largest crowd of the season the champions retained the cham pionship by a score of 10 to 8. One little 'word is the cause of all ball games and all horse races and that little word la "iff." If Nick Whitehead in the seventh inning with two men out and two on bases had not been handicapped by the obstruction in left field of the tennis court screen, there would have been a fair catch of Xtoveys long fly and the side would have been retired, for Nick seldom misses a fly balL As it was, the Torpedoes were at the bat in the first half of the seventh, Davey was given a tempting one and he sent It up to left field high in the air. Nick ran up the bank, reached the ball on the run, but his Impact with the ten nis screen bounced the ball out of his hands and two runs were made. But there is another story, to be told. 80 fax In the game the lively boys from the East Side constituting the Torpedoes hod been lining out the ball regardless, notwithstanding 'Whitehouses's good pitching. Their batting won their gam, and Multnomah's fielding was not suffi ciently strong to overcome the handicap. Their runs were -made principally by good clean hitting. In the first and seventh innings wherein they soorod three runs each, there was a series of pretty hits that would bring in runs under ordinary conditions and the Torpedoes were not slow to profit by It There is another side to the game. Multnomah had been tapping Bay's curves out pretty well, but their coaching with men on bases cost them several chances. Their play was not dopey by any means, but the other fellows hap pened to get the ball back on time to tag them. Blank was the record until the fourth inning, and then they tied the fuse pf the Torpedo battery into a hard "bowknot and bunched Ave runs, and again in the sixth they cut the connection and scored two more, leaving the score at M. A. A. C., 7; Torpedoes. 4. The Torpedoes tied the score in the seventh inning by Davey's lucky drive end pol ished off the game in the eighth by Arthle Parrotfs pretty three-bagger, scoring three more runs, and then it was all over but the cheering. By all means the best game of the season was the verdict of the crowd as they filed up the hill. Features wore plentiful and speaking of features it is about time that the thoroughly impartial and nard-worklng "Umpire Ed Rankin came in for his share of the glory. Bankin has umpired all the games on the Field during the season and at no time has there been a harsh crit icism nor a delay on account of weak de cisions. Always master of the situation and thoroughly honest and conscientious, be has established himself amid a host of friends both among the players and he paving public The game Itself abounded in bunchy, streaky qualities. Lucky and unlucky features followed in quick succession in almost every inning. Instance, Alnslie's hard luck in being beaten by the ball to first on apparently hits to the good on almoBt every time at bat; Chester Mur phy's daring base work that was nipped In the bud; Archie Parrott's and Baker's alternating between long hits and strike outs; 3avey's in-and-out playing at third, in one inning three assists and in another as many errors. And so on throughout the game. However, it was a rattling good game as ball games go with the bet ter and stronger batting team on top, Fleming, the old-time Multnomah pitch er, was billed to deal out his left-handers for the Torpedoes, but Bay was sub stituted and made good with the fans. Ho was steady and speedy, and did the trick. A noticeable feature was the pres--once on the East Side team of several old-time Multnomah players-nFlemlng, Corliss; Baker. Oliver. Davey, Oadke and Downs have all worn Multnomah colors in previous yars: but that made no difference in their playing. The Game. The Torpedoes were first at bat, send ing in Corliss to face "Whltehouse. Cor liss retired to the bench on three In effectual attempts to connect. Archie Parrott sont a grass-wltherer past Doble into Whitehead's territory, and reached second base. Baker followed suit scor ing Parrott, and going to third on Oliver's out, Wlckersham to Bruce, afterward crossing the plate on Downs single. Downs came in on Zan's failing to handle Stutt's fly successfully, and the side wont out by Stutt being out on his at tempt to purloin second base. In Mult nomah's half. Chester Murphy placed a neat one through Infield, and beat out tba ball to first by speedy work, but was tagged out immediately afterward by playing too far off first. The remainder of the inning was fruitless. In the sec ond and third no runs were scored by eJthor side. In their half of the fourth the Torpedoes scored one on Downs in field hit and steal, Davey's sacrifice, and Gadke's single. Multnomah's half was a noisy one, Ainsile and Wlckersham each was presented with lives at first by stow handling of swift ones. Ainsile scored on a throw to catch him off third base, and Wlckersham came home on Dble's long center field hit. Zan in the meantime had walked to first, and came in on a passed ball, Doble doing like wise soon after. Bruce, who had been sont to first -on four balls, crossed the plate on Whitehead's long hit to Downs far three bases. Whltehouse struck out, and Murphy out at first from a grounder to pitcher. Total, 5 runs, and the root ers rooted. Been side was blanked in the fifth. Multnomah tallied twice In the sixth. Dobie-flew out to center, Bruce made the most of Davey's poor throw of his ground er and scored on Whitehead's swift one, that caromed off Baker's foot. White house placed a safe hit over second base and sent Whitehead over the plate for the second run. In the seventh the score was tied by Whitehead's excusable dropping of Davey's long fly, on account of the tennis screens, when men were' on bases. The Torpedoes scored threo more In the eighth. Gadke and Bay each hit safely. Corliss walked, and then Archie Parrott cleared the bases by a beauty to right field, reaching third. Multnemah scored one on Doble's base on baas, Doscher's single to right, and Whitehead's hot one to Stutt. In the ninth each sldo went out in one-two-three order, and the agony was over. Judge Cameron overruled yesterday af ternoon the demurrer to the complaint in the case of Lawrence Sullivan, and the case was set for hearing next Thurs day morning. The prosecution had its witnesses ready to try the case yester day, but the defense urged the necessity of having a few days time in which to hring important witnesses from Califor nia Whan tho prosecution asked that j the testimony of Captain Stivens. of the British ship Nlthsdale, now almost ready to sail, be taken down In writing so that he should suffer no delay, the de fense again demanded Its right of cross examination, after haying investigated the case. The Nlthsdale .has" not yet 'shipped her crew and Judge Cameron will do all he can to expedite the hear ing of the case. By his overruling the demurrer the case will be tried on its merits as being only one violation of the law regarding the charge for sailors, the S60 paid for the eight men shipped being taken collectively and considered as one Infraction of the law. Instead of eight, if each one were tried separately. Ralph WHson, the Taqulna boy, who pleaded guilty to stealing Dr. Lang worthy's bicycle, was sentenced to SO days' Imprisonment. Bevenue amounting to $465 was received In the court yesterday by the forfeiture of cash ball In the 31 cases brought up of slot-machine owners arrested. DAILY CITY STATISTICS. Real Estate Transfers.
