NOT EVERYBODY IS AWAY There Are Some Who Stay In Tovrn and Enjoy Themselves, Though Social Events Are Few. There is nothing quite as it ought to bo; And the sweetest draught we drain Has always a bitter taste in the dregs That tempts us te drink again. And yet if conditions were perfect on earth. Heaven would cease to be. It is that same taste of the bitter that makes life's flavor so fascinatingly sweet; that saves it from insipidity. The mistake we mortals are prone to make is In our attitude toward the troubles, great or small, which interrupt the serene flow of dally existence. There is nothing so abso lutely discouraging to trouble as a cheerr Iul reception. Meet it with a smile and persist in regarding it as a blessing, and it speedily dissolves disappears. An Example. An Instance! Well, there is Mrs. , one of Portland's prettiest and most popular young women, who has counted all along upon a month at the seaside. Business confpllcations, coming up unexpectedly, put the contemplated trip out of the question. The new gowns, the fetching hats, the rattling costume modeled after that of a famous belle at Naragansett Pier are, at this moment hanging upon their respective hooks, or reposing in boxes in her rather spacious wardrobe, and the young woman herself is having what she describes as a "perfectly love ly time," lounging In a, hammock under the trees every afternoon and reading ro mances and poetry. "You see," she explained, "I have had bo little time to read since I was mar? rled. We are asked everywhere, and we entertain a great deal and, somehow, I never get a chance to more than glance a the magazines, and as for new books, though J brings me stacks of them, the leaves are rarely cut. I had almost forgotten -what a love story is like." "But ,wexe. you not disappointed, after all your, .preparations, too? And you were to chaperon those two charmlng glrls!" At Ocean Park the waes are white, The sky Is deeply blue. But singing waves and tender skies And sifted sands of gold They tempt .her not who reads beneath The troes, "To Have and to Hold." "Everybody is out of town," has become a stock phrase. Those who are not, like the above-mentioned sensible young woman, are taking a much-needed rest from soical duty. There have been a few weddings, dinners and parties which are duly recorded in another column. There was a boating party given last night by Miss Gunn, of San Francisco, About 25 guests were invited. The party left the city in a launch at 7:30 o'clock and returned In timo for the "last car" home. There was a delicious supper served on the green shore of the beautiful Willamette, somewhere in the neighbor hood of Sellwood, and singing and music and happy laughter under the glorious Summer stars. There is nothing more de lightful than a boating party, under favorable conditions. Appronchinpr Marriage. One of the most interesting social func tions of the week ocourred Friday after noon, To my regret, I am requested not to mention it in print, and, because I am nothing if not obliging, I comply with "tho request. However, I have the pleasuro of announcing the marriage of Mr. William Asher Knight, of Portland, to Miss Mitchell, of Odessa, New York, to take place at the homo of the Intended bride. August 5, at 11 o'clook in the morning. MIsb Mitchell is not unknown in Portland, having visit ed hore for a time. Mr. Knight, who is a popular young man of this city, is rather more sensible than most of his fellows in .that ho is taking unto himself a wife. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Knight-will leave Odessa for New York City. From there they go to Albany, Buffalo, Boston, Chicago and Des Moines, the latter place being Mr. Knight's former home. They will reach Portland In September and will make this their placo of permanent residence. AGATHA. MATRIMONIAL ALLIANCES. Wedding-a of the Week In Portland and at Other Points. Bu chanan; the best man was 4 Mr. Fred Stuart, brother of the bride. 'The latter, was. .attired In. a traveling suit of tan covert cloth. Immediately- following the ceremony, Dr. Kellogg baptized little Venus Boyd, niece of the bride, Mrs. Nanie Starr act ing as 'godmother. Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins .wore the recipients of many handsome gifts, and left the evening of their mar riage for their future home in New What com. Bnrlcbolder-Tyner. A pretty wedding was celebrated Wed nesday evening, at St. John's Presby terian Church, the contracting parties be ing Miss Anna .Louisa Tyner, of Indian apolis, and Rev. Abram Hess Burkholder, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Ridgefleld, Wash., Rev. E. W. St Plerro officiating. The bride wore a dress of white silk and carried a bouquet of car nations and maiden-hair ferns. Masters Sterling and Addison Llndsley acted as pages, and the wedding march was played by Miss Maggie Heckner. Tho church had been beautifully decor ated for the occasion by the Kings' Daughters. After the ceremony an In formal reception was held at the parson age. Rov. and Mrs. Burkholder left Fri day for Newport, and will be at home to their friends after September 6, at Ridge fleld. Wash. Grove-TucJcer. A pretty home wedding was solemnized July 24, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Lovelock, 4SS East Market street. Rev. Mr. Black officiating. The contracting parties were Miss Ac lie Tucker, of this city, and Mr. Frank B. Groves, of Des Moines, la. The house was decorated prettily. The bride was attired in a gown of white organdie, with trimmings of lace and ribbon. She car ried a bouquet of white carnations, and was attended by Mrs. Minnie J. Palmer, who was prettily gowned In pale blue organdie, and who carried a bouquet of pink sweet peas. Mr. Thomas R, Copley acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Groves will bo at home to their friends after July 23, at 1G7H Park street "Kortcn-Kohn. There was a pretty wedding at the res idence of Mr. Henry Kahn, 261 North Fifteenth street, Saturday afternoon, when Miss Nettie Kahnwas united in marriage to Mr. E. N. Korten. The bride was becomingly gowned in blue and gray, and carried a bouquet of carnations. Mrs. Kahn's dr ess was a black and white silk. The house was beautifully decorated with potted plants, palms and the foliage of the Oregon grape. The dining-room was in pink and green pink rosebuds, La France roses and garlands of Virginia creeper. Mr. and Mrs. Korton will be at home to their friends after August 1 at 2G1 North Fifteenth street IX AND ABODT PORTLAND. Entertainment and Social Event Here and Elsewhere Mr. and Mr. F. H, Lechler, of Mll waukle, entertained last Wednesday even ing 40 neighbors of the Women of Woodcraft, Portland Circle, No. 55. The house and grounds presented a very at tractive appearance, the lawn and veran da being bedecked with Chinese lanterns and rustic seats and hammocks being placed In every nook and corner. The in terior of the bouse was illuminated from cellar to garret There were music and refreshments, tho guests going to their homes on the last car. One of the most delightful functions of the season was the birthday party, given by Mrs. John W. Watson, on Tuesday af tornoon, July 17, at her home on Kerby street The early part of the afternoon was given up to pla Ing whist Mrs. Theo dore NIcolai winning the first prize and Mrs. P. J. Johnson the "booby." The en tertainment was brought to a close with refreshments. The table was prettily dec orated with a wealth of beautiful flowers. Miss Mlna Mutton, of McMlnmille, who is Visiting her friends in this city, was given a pleasant surprise party last Wed nesday evening, at the home of Miss la Gerstle, East Taylor and Thirty-second streets. The large lawn was tastefully decorated with suspended lanterns, and various games were played until a late hour, when dainty refreshments were served. The ladles of Orphia temple, Rathbono Sisters, were very pleasantly entertained by the past chief, Mrs. C. Xiouch. last Thursday afternoon, at her home at Mount Taboo. The principal feature was a game, entitled "A Floral Love Story," airs. G. Wheeler capturing the prize. Refreshments were served. Mrs. James Zehrung'gave a dinner party Tuesday evening, In honor of Miss Edith Chandler, of Omaha. The table decora tions were green and yellow. Fram Assembly, United Artisans, gave a banquet at Elks Hall, In tho Marquam Building, Friday, July 20, which was largely attended and at which J. M. Leach, the retiring master artisan, was presented with a gold watch and chain by the members of the assembly. A most enjoyable party was given at th6 home of Frances Cottlngham, July 20, in honor of the guest of the hostess. Hubbs, foreman of the Bouthern Pacific paint shops, on the East Side, and who has been transferred to Oakland, Cal., was tendered a farewell party .at his home, 644 Powell street Tuesday evening, Jhe 24th Inst The em ployes of the paint shop presented him with a very handsome gold watch, chain and pendant The pendant was excep tionally appropriate, being a painter's palette and brushes. On one side Mr. Hubba' name is engraved, and on 'the other the words: "From the Employes of the O. & C Paint Shops." The evening was pleasantly spent in music, sjnging and speech-making.
