The salty did aot mean neces sarily that the statement was considered faorable, but simply that the bears de sired to cover their short contracts before the two holidays pending. There was rather acute weakness at times m St. Paul, Missouri Pacific, West ern Union, Burlington and Sugar. The moiement of prioss was rather erratic, but the nat changes en the day are small and mixed, with the majority on the side of losses. The eleeing of the market was strong at a rally on the short covering. As a matter of fact, opinion on the bank statement is perplexed, and confused. The enormous loan expansion caused amaze ment. In no single week during all of last Tear did the loan expansion reach S1C.009. 000. In the week ending: February 4 last ear, loans were increased $15,164,400, due to the active flotation of new Industrial combinations then in full force. This compares with $0,162,466 increase this week. Since January 18 loans have been increased 44,4,e9&, compare! with an in crease of $38,17, in the corresponding period of last year, when speculation and company flotation were in full tide. It Is suggested that some of the deposit ac counts, which passed from the banks to the newly organised companies during the coarse of last year, are new coming baok to the banks. There is nothing in the regular course of business or speculation to account for tbe Tecent great extension in the loan Item of the clearine-house banks. Re turns of bank clearings by telegraph for Jive days to the Financial Chronicle show a sharp falling off at the four principal Eastern cities, and increases at Chicago and St. Louis in considerable proportion, while at New Orleans the increase over last year is nearly 4C per cent. The in crease in the South is doubtless due large ly to the activity In the cotton market and is suggestive of the future demand tipon New York for funds from that sec tion. But the clearing-house returns servo only to thicken the problem of the phe nomenal expansion of loans. The upward movement of prices, which found its Inception last week in the metal stocks, broadened out this week so as to embrace pretty much the whole list of securities dealt in on the New Tork ex change. By the middle of the week, the advance had apparently reached its cul mination, and on Wednesday afternoon the bears succeeded In toppling over the over extended long account of speculators with Insufficient resources and a reactionary tendency supervened. Such reactions ln eitably discourage outside interest in the market, and business fell back Into the hands of professional operators or large moneyed interests, who have to do witlx the control and detailed knowledge f the affairs of the great corporations. The movement of the market has been almost wholly due to technical causes, the general news of business being with few exceptions favorable and availing not a little to maintain a Arm undertone to the stock market, even while It showed weakness due to the technical causes. The advance in prices was viewed with more or less distrust, owing to the pal pable manipulation which accompanied it. Professional bull pools known to be long on stocks were observed to be bidding up prices of their holdings, in accordance With a well-recognized principle of action among professional operators. It is one of the strongest propensities of human nature to desire to possess something that 1b seen to be advancing in price; so that a pool of stock operators, after buy ing thousands of shares of a stock, and then advancing the price by bids for emaVer amounts of stock by successive stages, may And sufficient demand for the stock aroused among the outside pub lic to absorb all of the pool holdings at the higher level. Needless to say, such an operation i assisted by any authentic good news regarding the particular stocks affected, or regarding the general specu lative prospect, as well as by Tumors and ' Up?' ' of good things to come, the latter being even more effective with a reck less class of speculators than the sober and reliable business facts. But, how cer true the news may be -which accom panies a rise, tbe completion of the above- G"eribed deal leaves s. market In a weak. cned condition technically. Stocks held by compact, well-organized pw,s, -lth skill and money resources to bu up the supplies offering, and thus maintain the price, have passed to weak and scattering holders who have bousht them -with borrowed money on, a narrow mrrgln, and who have no resource but to e 1 ut whoa the prices deoline. Then comes the bear operator in stocks, who f a large btooks in a buoyant market, and borrows them for delivery until he lias offered prices down and- wiped out the margins of the unfortunate speculator, fi-roing hint to sell out at a lower figure, to the profit of the bear. The week's figures, it may be stated, are In excess of anything reported at this season last year, when stock exchange transactions, both In current shares and bonds purchased, ran away ahead of what business Is now reported. The tremendous raise In loans at this time is somewhat difficult Sit explanation. The statement in detail shows the Increases have been pretty well distributed over- the entire list of banks. The commercial paper market Is more active, but even taking this fact and stock exchange business into consideration, the total expansion over, run's the maximum needs Ot both: It Is quite likely that arrangements completed for several large deals pending contribut ed to the. total gain. The statement, showing as It does a de crease in surplus-reserve for the-flrst tlmo since December 9, may be Interpreted to mean that money rates will become firmer If anything. Last year the month of February witnessed a decrease "In reserve ef J18.COJ.000, and the reserve fell to J15.000, 000 In April. It is not unlikely that the same showing, but In a minor way, will be witnessed this year. The Donna Francisca missed ( her canceling date by failure to arrive January 31, and as freights were inclined ' to dullness at that time, she was thrown - up by the charterers. The first week In ' February witnessed quite a stiffening in the freight market, and the vessel was again chartered as soon as she arrived in the river, at a rate reported to be Gd higher than her original rate, 39a 6d. Her experience was similar to that of the Englehorn, on tho Sound. That vessel los,t a charter at 3Ss 9d, and after threq days onthe free list was again taken up at the same rate, If the present strength in freights con tinues, there will be no danger of any of the belated ships which are making long passages losing their charters, even though they miss their canceling dates. The situation all over the coast Is remark ably strong, and California Is trailing right along after Portland In paying high rates. In connection with the charter of the Cleomene, which was taken at 3Ss 9d, in San Francisco a few days ago, the Commercial News has the following: "Grain freights are strong and tend up ward, as the last charter, for wheat only, shows. Not only here, but at the north the trend of rates Is upward, for, as terse ly put by a merchant, 'there are two tons of grain for every ton carrying capacity In slsht,' Of course, there must be a market for the grain to Induce shipping; but, statistically, all advance should go to ships, owing to present scarcity, and poor prospects of increasing the supply." ANNIE THOMAS SPOKEN. Overdue Ship Sighted Off the Horn With Foretopsnllant Mnt Gone. Reinsurance Is again mounting upward on the British ship Annie Thomas, now out nearly 200 days from Cardiff for Ac apulco. As h'gh as 50 per cent was quoted on the vessel, but the rate receded on news of her being spoken. As she has failed to put In an appearance, it is now back to 25 per cent. The vessel was spoken October 12 by the British bark Invermay, in latitude 57 south, longitude 71 west, and reported all well. A week later she was again spoken by the same vessel In 57 south and 70 west, and at, that time had lost her foretopgallant mast, and some sails. She signaled for her latitude, which was given her by the Invermay! The latter vessel arrived at San Fran cisco December 31. The Annie Thomas 13 under charter to Toad wheat at .Portland.
