At 54, the 15-year employee of Serratto restaurant on North- west 21st Avenue (where custom- ers' children know him as "Uncle Tony") had just purchased his first house. As he packed up the rent- al apartment he'd called home for 25 years, he noticed a swelling in his feet that didn't seem right. An emergency room visit turned into an extended stay at Oregon Health & Science University’s (OHSU) Knight Cancer Institute. Before Hilsmeier had unpacked a single box at his new Cully neigh- borhood fixer-upper, he was diag- nosed with Acute Myeloid Leuke- mia (AML), one of the deadliest forms of blood cancer affecting bone marrow. After several rounds of che- motherapy, in June 2023 Hils- meier received a potentially life-saving bone marrow trans- plant. He continues to receive in- fusions from his OHSU medical team multiple times each week. “This cancer fight for my life has taken me to some dark plac- Doctor at ‘The Knight Cancer Institute’ and Tony Hilsmeier es, but I believe in miracles,” said Hilsmeier. “I keep myself positive with the help of my incredible medical team at OHSU and the love and support of my friends, loved ones and community.” Hilsmeier has the strength of the Portland music commu- nity in his corner. His family of friends, bandmates and col- leagues have begun to raise the funds needed to cover his mortgage, medical and life ex- penses thus far. However, as he continues to recover from his transplant and fight for his life, Hilsmeier needs addition- al financial support. His health and ongoing hospital stays have left him unable to work since December 2023. A GoFundMe for Hilsmeier has been set up. Please consider contributing so Hilsmeier can focus his full en- ergies on fighting his leukemia. Hilsmeier has been a loy- al supporter of local music for three decades, and is the found- ing singer, songwriter and gui- tarist for Portland rock band Go Fever, among many other musi- cal collaborations.
