Page 8 June 07, 2023 Tony Ray Washington: A Pillar of Community and Loving Family Man With deep sorrow, we an- nounce the passing of Mr. Tony Ray Washington following a courageous battle with pancreat- ic cancer. Born in Portland, Ore- gon, on May 9, 1956, Tony passed away peacefully in his hometown on May 21, 2023. Tony attended King Elemen- tary and Jefferson High School in Portland, with a brief spell at Chanute High School, Kansas during his sophomore year. A nat- ural sportsman, Tony’s athletic prowess was undeniable. His ex- ceptional skill as a baseball play- er led to his induction into the Se- nior Babe Ruth Baseball League Hall of Fame. He also excelled in basketball and football, leaving an indelible mark on all who wit- nessed his athletic abilities. After school, Tony began his professional journey with notable positions at Portland City Hall. He ultimately found his niche in media, serving as an Advertising Manager for the Portland Observer. His pas- sion for communication extended beyond his career, as he tirelessly pursued his dream of launching his own magazine, “Imagine That.” In addition to endeavors, Tony gral role in his was responsible several Oregon his professional played an inte- community. In his leisure time, Tony was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in fishing and communing with nature. He was a dedicated sports fan, particularly of the Kan- sas City Chiefs, enjoyed watching survival shows, and cherished mo- ments slow dancing with his wife. Tony’s faith was a significant part of his life. He was saved 2.5 years ago and found spiritual home in the Community Church of God. His regular study of the word and attendance at services, as well as his bond with Pastor Franklin, provided him peace and comfort that was instrumental in his journey until his transition. Tony is survived by his wife, Helen Washington. He was a lov- ing father to Marcus, Deandre, Ashley, Destini, and Christopher, and a nurturing figure to stepchil- dren Jerome, Ebony, Rahsaan, and Alex. Siblings, Ronald Wash- ington, Mark and Cynthia Wash- ington, Audrey “Peaches” Wash- ington, Charles Jackson, Leif Washington, Carry Ann Wash- ington, Roxanne Washington and Dennis Payne Jr., and a host of beloved grandchildren and foster children. He will be remembered by a host of cousins, nieces, neph- ews, family and friends. Tony also leaves behind a host of beloved grandchildren and foster children. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Duane Washington, brothers Charles, Gary, and Cory, daughter Anna Marie, and nephews Chris- topher and La’Ron. The funeral service will be held on June 9, 2023, at East- side Imago Dei Church, located at 3130 SE 148th Ave, Portland, Oregon 97236. Tony will be laid to rest at Skyline Memorial Gar- dens, with a repass back at East- side Imago Dei Church.
