Page 24 June 10, 2020 Giving Back at the Jefferson Food Pantry r ichard s anchez The Jeffer- son Food Pantry has been going on since the be- ginning of the COVID-19 pan- demic in April and has been go- ing on every Tuesday and Friday. We get deliveries from Hopscotch foundation, Urban Gleaners, Main Spring, and many other small do- nations. With this food that gets donated to us, we have been able to feed over 400 people at one time. We usually set it up in a straight line, just like any other food pan- try. We have volunteers that come every time we do this. While they are there, we have some jobs that we need to do. We have about a couple of people that help us sort vegetables and fruits, while others set up and put together the tents and tables. Others have sorted and organized the food on the table. When we get started, we have people go to different stations, so canned food, perishables, rice and grains, eggs, etc. We do this from 1 to 3 pm and while we do this, people can get back in line and get more food if they want. On Fridays, we have desserts that are beneficial to everyone. Urban Gleaners only come on Friday and they deliver some great food, while also delivering food for volunteers. We also get boxes of food from them on this day, so if someone does not want to stand in line for a long while, they can come and just grab a box. While it does get hectic some- times, due to the number of vol- unteers we have, we are able to make do with them. While some of our volunteers don’t make it sometimes, we always have enough people to do the job at the minimum. I also want to say thank you to the wonderful supporters that we have in this group and for all the volunteers that come Tuesdays and Fridays. Scholarships Empower Class of 2020 The Jefferson High School Class of 2020 continues to work hard to apply for and win a multitude of scholarships in varying amounts from private scholarship foundations, community organizations, colleges and universities. The following list is not comprehensive, it does not include institutional scholarships awarded directly by colleges or universities, and there are likely others we were not aware of at the time of publication.
