Jazz Quartet Honors John Coltrane Celebrating singer’s greatest hit 50 years later A special Portland concert is set to celebrate 50 years since the release of John Coltrane’s greatest hit, “A Love Supreme.” Coltrane’s studio recording of this suite has been named one of the best jazz albums of all time, and represents a culmination of the late African American musi- cian’s genius. The work express- John Coltrane es Coltrane’s gratitude to God for giving him the strength to over- come a heavy drug addiction. The Adam Carlson Quartet, a Eugene-based ensemble will per- form the tribute show. Together, they hope to bring Coltrane’s spir- itual offering to life, mixing their own artistic voices with the original intent of this monumental piece. The concert will take place Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. at Mi- chelle’s Pianos, 600 S.E. Hip Hop Day at City Hall Mayor Charlie Hales is calling for Portland’s first annual Hip- Hop Day with a free all-ages con- cert at City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be hosted by StarChile and DJ O.G.ONE, with performances by Vinnie De- wayne, Mic Capes, Jon Belz, DJ Juggernaut, Lady X, and DJ Wels. “We’re going to have some of Portland’s newest hip-hop stars perform in City Hall, honoring hip-hop as an important piece of our identity as a city — and hope- fully bring people to City Hall who’ve never been here before,” Hales said Food will be provided by Q Burgers and Blazin’ Ribs N Teri- yaki. The courtyard in front of City Hall will be reserved for the concert itself, while the building inside will be open to the public past normal business hours. Free tours will be offered, along with programming throughout the day to highlighting Portland hip-hop scene.
