From prominent American playwright Theresa Rebeck, the off-Broadway and regional the- atre hit takes a comedic and ex- istential look backstage at what it takes when “the show must go on.” The story follows an ill-fated and exasperated stage manager whose life he ruined long ago. It’s a funny existential exposé on human motivation that exam- ines the underbelly of the theatre business and the personal drama behind the curtain. The Understudy runs through Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Alder Street Stage of the Artist Repertory Theatre, downtown. A pay-what- you-can first preview perfor- mance takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
