Page 2 The June 10, 2015 Week in Review Pool Party Cop Resigns Tuesday A weekend video of a Texas police officer pulling a gun on teenagers and kneeling on a 14-year-old black teen girl in a bikini during a dispute at a pool party led to the officer resigning his position on Tuesday. A crowd of protesters marched Monday night in the McKinney, Texas neighborhood to show outrage over the heavy-handed police enforcement. Officer Indicted for Murder A grand jury indicted former North Charleston, S.C. police officer Michael Slager on a murder charge Monday in connection to the April shooting and killing of Walter Scott, an unarmed black motorist who was shot several times in the back as he ran away from a traffic stop. The death sparked outrage when cell phone video from a bystander went viral online. Freed Man Commits Suicide A 22-year-old man who won his release after being wrongly im- prisoned for three years without any charges being filed against him committed suicide on Satur- day. Kalief Browder was 16 years old when he was arrested for al- legedly stealing a backpack in New York. His case made national headlines after he was profiled in the New Yorker. Victim Shot Himself A juvenile male accidentally shot himself in the leg at the McDonalds restaurant on Southeast Powell Bou- levard Sunday, police said. Authorities determined the gunfire was self inflected and pointed to the dan- ger of youth improperly handling firearms. Police removed the young man’s gun and said changes may follow an investigation. Hastert Pleads Not Guilty Embattled former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of bank fraud and lying to the FBI. The alleged wrongdoing involves the sexual abuse of a male student while the former Republican lead- er was serving as a high school teacher and wrestling coach decades ago. A.D. Bailey III, 19, was recent- ly arrested at his parent’s home in Vancouver and faces an indict- ment in Multnomah County for murder in the death of John Low- rey Jr., authorities said. Answers Sought in Violent Death Police are seeking the public’s help in a downtown assault that led to the death of a 54-year-old Portland man. Marvin L. Holiday was at- tacked Thursday night near Northwest Flanders and Sixth Avenue in the Old Town district, police said. Officers responded to the assault around 10:20 p.m., but believe the attack happened earli- er around 8 p.m. in the same area. He was wearing a black Nike sweatshirt, dark jeans, and black boots. An autopsy was complet- ed and police are still investigat- ing what may have caused his death. He died Saturday after being hospitalized for critical injuries. Detectives think that someone in the community might have more information on the case and are asking for the public’s help.
