It will be opened to the public, and provide access to 477 households not currently served by another park within a half mile, parks officials announced Tues- day. The City Council approved the $880,000 purchase and the deal was completed on May 29. Parks System Development Charges, the one-time fees assessed on new de- velopment, will cover the costs. The property is now open for public use for picnics, reading, re- laxing and other passive activities. A process for formally naming the park will take place once the site has a Master Plan, officials said. “The St. John’s Community has experienced considerable res- idential growth over the past few years,” notes Portland Parks Com- missioner Amanda Fritz“. “The opportunity to purchase the N Crawford St and N Polk Ave prop- erty with Parks System Develop- ment Charge revenue provided a way to increase the parkland in the area to help mitigate the impact of that growth.” Metro operates the Oregon Con- vention Center, Oregon Zoo, Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and Expo Center and provides transportation planning, recy- cling, natural area and other ser- vices to the region.
