The paper’s corporate name, Cory Publishing commemorated Cory Washington’s contribution to the paper. He was shot to death following a basketball-game dispute in Peninsula Park in 1991. After Joyce’s passing in March of 1996 her son Charles Washington steped up and became publisher. He was a fierce advocate, a tireless worker, and an uncompromising humanitarian. Charles Washington passed away in December 2012. Their legacies live on through the newspaper and surviving family members. Mark and Rakeem Washington oversee the daily operations of the paper and are heavily involved in supporting the youth of Portland, just as Joyce and Charles Washington did for decades.
