MLK 97211 Art by Dr. Yemonja Smalls United by Art An interactive multicultural art show will be held in Portland, thanks to work of local students and the inspiration from a powerful image titled Come-Unity created by the gifted Chicago author and illustrator, Dr. Yemonja Smalls. Warner Pacific College student and co-curator Sunshine Dixon is excited to welcome the exhibit, Come-Unity, during the month of April in the Otto L. Linn Library. An artist reception is scheduled to take place on Thursday. There will be live music, poetry, and in- teractive art opportunities. Krispy Kreations artist Rusty Weise will even provide an oversized edible work of art; and that is something you can sink your teeth into. “Art can bring people together. It has been a dream of mine to find a way to incorporate my love for art into my work in the library,” says curator and Library Director Mari Bettineski. “I majored in Art History here at Warner and believe this library space should aid in building community. This event is a great start toward that end.” Although Dr. Yemonja Smalls will not be on hand for the show at Warner Pacific, her work inspired its current theme. “Dr. Y,” as af- fectionately known, is a self-taught artist who gives birth to creations in acrylic paint and various other me- dia. Vibrant and restorative, Yemon- ja’s work focuses on the intimacies of human relationship through de- piction of figure. She is known for her fine art paintings, greeting cards, furniture embellishment, murals as well as a newly developed apparel and accessory line, Just Human™. Yemonja’s works have been exhib- ited in the Museum of Science and Industry, Gallery Guichard, and one of her recent pieces, “No Matter What” currently hangs on the set of the Fox tv show “Empire”. Come-Unity will celebrate its artist reception on Thursday, April 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Otto L. Linn Library at Warner Pacific College, located at 2219 Southeast 68th Avenue, Portland. The event is free and open to the public. Bobby Watson joins an all-star lineup for a tribute concert that is part of the PDX Jazz series on Friday, April 17 at Alberta Abbey, 126 N.E.
