Students Mourn Classmates
(AP) -- George Zimmerman, the
former neighborhood watch volun-
teer who fatally shot Trayvon Mar-
tin in a 2012 confrontation with the
teenager, will not face federal
charges, the Justice Department said
Tuesday.
The decision, announced in the
waning days of Attorney General
Eric Holder's tenure, resolves a case
that focused on self-defense gun
laws and became a flashpoint in the
national conversation about race
two years before the Ferguson,

Several hundred students from
West Linn and Oregon City high
schools joined together Monday
night to remember three students
killed in weekend traffic wrecks.
West Linn Juniors Antonio Cabal-
lero and Cooper Hill were killed Sat-
urday in the Columbia Gorge. Or-
egon City Senior Maddy West was
killed Friday night in a head-on crash
near her home.
Council Raises Minimum Wage
The Portland City Council voted
unanimously last week to raise the
minimum wage for workers under
city contracts to $15 per hour. Over
30 community members, union and
community organization represen-
tatives, faith leaders, and more spoke
out in favor of the resolution.
Juveniles Charged in Shooting
Last Thursday, the Portland Police
Bureau Gang Enforcement Team
arrested two 14-year-old males in

Tuition Increase Draws Fire
Students waged a protest Thurs-
day as Portland Community College
board members approved a tuition
hike, raising the per-credit cost from
$92 to $96 starting in 2016-17. A
student who takes about 15-credit-
hours per quarter will see her tuition
rise from $1,380 to $1,440.
Woman Found Dead at Park
A woman found dead last Wednes-
day in the Willamette River at Kelly
Point Park in north Portland has been
identified as 22-year-old Elyesicia
Chevonna Payton. Police say they
have charged her boyfriend, Nicho-
las Ross Estrada, 22, wither murder.
Gang Members Accused
Five alleged white supremacist gang
members are accused of kidnapping
and torturing men at a southeast
Portland auto shop because they
either "snitched'' on them or
wouldn't cough up information that
the gang members wanted, accord-
ing to a 14-count indictment.
