Raw and Heartfelt Blues
Curtis Salgado
tours for hit
CD ‘Soul Shot’
Curtis Salgado, touring in sup
port o f his blistering A lligator
Records debut CD, “Soul Shot,” will
give two performances at Jimmy
Mak's in Portland on Friday, Nov. 28
and Saturday, Nov. 29.
A Portland favorite for years,
Salgado won three 2013 Blues Mu
sic Awards including the coveted
B.B. King Entertainer of The Year.
He also won for Soul Blues Male
Artist of The Year for the second
consecutive year, and for Soul Blues
Album of The Year (SOUL SHOT).
Effortlessly mixing R&B, funk and
blues with a delivery that is raw and
heartfelt, he moves with ease from
the tenderest ballads to the most
full-throated stompers.
In 2006 Salgado was sidelined
when he underwent a successful
liver transplant and then shortly
afterwards was diagnosed with and
then beat lung cancer. Like so many
musicians, Curtis had no health in
surance. His medical expenses were
paid for in part by a huge outpour
ing of love and money from his
fellow m usicians and his huge
Northwest fan base. He bounced
back with a perfect bill of health in
2008, releasing “Clean Getaway.”
Now, with “Soul Shot,” he is
tougher and more focused than ever,

Motown Singer Remembered
Jimmy Ruffin
Page II
(AP) - Jimmy Ruffin, the Motown singer
whose hits include "What Becomes o f the
Brokenhearted" and "Hold on to My Love,"
is being remembered after his Nov. 17
death at the age of 78.
Jimmy Lee Ruffin was bom on May 7,
1936, in Collinsville, Mississippi. He was
signed to Berry Gordy's Motown Records,
and had a string of hits in the 1960s,
including "What Becomes of the Broken
hearted," which became a Top 10 pop hit.
He had continued success with songs
such as "I've Passed This Way Before"
and "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've
Got," but Ruffin marked a comeback in
1980 with his second Top 10 hit, "Hold on
to My Love." The song was produced by
Robin Gibb, the Bee Gees member who
died in 2012.
Ruffin was the older brother of Tempta
tions lead singer David Ruffin, who died in
1991 at age 50.
