Marches continued into Monday when black activist and Professor Cornel West were arrested alongside 49 other protestors. So far, more than 4,000 people have died because of Ebola. The Vatican released an official document on Monday that included a statement that the homosexual commu nity had "gifts and qualities to offer" and asked if Catholicism could accept gays and recognize positive aspects of same-sex couples. Gay rights groups con sidered the statement a breakthrough for the Catholic Church, but some conservatives called it a betrayal of family values. Judge Overturns Alaska Ban A U.S. District Court Judge Monday ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in Alaska, calling the state’s ban unconstitutional and a “deprivation of basic due process and equal protection” under the 14th Amend ment. The ruling comes on the heels of similar federal rulings affecting Idaho and Nevada. Compromised Data Voter I.D. Law Reinstated A federal appeals court on Tuesday reinstated Texas' tough voter ID law for the November election. The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily blocks last week's ruling by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos in Corpus Christi, who determined the law unconstitutional and similar to a poll tax designed to dissuade minorities from voting. A recent compromise in the Oregon Employment Department’s website may have left some individuals v u ln erab le to id en tity theft. S p ecifically , the WorkSource Oregon page, which offers job place ment assistant to residents seeking work, may have had its data opened up by unknown sources. On Monday, the state began mailing out information on a free offer for identity theft protection. First Case of Ebola Transmission in the US Romney Not to Run in 2016 President Obama is calling for an investigation into how a hospital worker caught Ebola from a patient at a Dallas hospital. Nina Pham, a nurse who treated a Liberian national in Texas, is currently under quarantine and has been given a blood transfusion from an American Ebola survivor.
