they can sit together and relate to
my plays, and laugh together,
which is healing.
I am called to this because I can
bring the world closer, in my own
way, through the stories I tell. It’s
im portant to be able to have
everyone’s story told.
Your play is about an African
family, is that inspired by your
own family?
My family definitely inspired
me while I was writing this. Also,
growing up in Africa. It’s impor
tant, especially in America, for
every culture to have a place. If

Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and

transportation planning, recycling,
natural area and other services to
the region.

culture if they don’t see it the way it
really is? It’s family, just like their
families. There’s love, and struggle,
and laughter. I ’m telling my memo
ries of my African family, and there
are no lions in it.
