C am e Mae Weems, a Portland native who has become world-renown
for her photography, documenting the black experience, was honored
Monday by Black Entertainment Television (BET) for her achieve­
ments and contributions to the arts.
PSU Faculty Strike Possible
After 10 months of bargaining, the American Association of University Professors of
Portland State University declared Monday they are at an impasse and closer to a potential
strike. The union will be holding a rally Thursday, Feb. 27 to bring public attention to their
demands for a new contract that defends “quality, affordable public higher education.”
Attorney General Won’t Back Gay Marriage Ban
Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, in a legal filing made on Thursday, said that she
will not defend the state’s ban on gay marriage. She cited a recent Supreme Court decision

of a law prohibiting federal recognition of same-sex
marriage, as unconstitutional.

Rose Court Selections Begin
57 students were selected Saturday to return to a second round of judging for the 100th
Portland Rose Festival Queen Coronation. Portland’s high schools and several metro
schools including Gladstone, West Linn, and Lake Oswego are represented.
Federal Reserve Names Charles Wilhoite
The Federal Reserve Bank has appointed Portland businessman and com­
munity leader Charles Wilhoite to its San Francisco circle of economic
advisers, it was reported Monday. W ilhoite’s appointment is set for a three-
year term.
Benson Students March to Save Football
More than 100 students marched to the Portland School Board meeting
Monday night after the school district’s athletic director Marshall Haskins submitted a fall
football schedule to the state that did not include a Benson team. A final decision on the
fate of Benson’s football program has yet been made, officials said.
