February 26, 2014 The Portland Observer Black History Month Page 13 ' X ismitismsi Inspired by Buddha’s Quest Asia dance company’s stunning homage to enlightenment White Bird presents the Portland debut of Asia’s most acclaimed dance company, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, Tuesday, March 4, at the Keller Auditorium, present ing their masterwork “Songs of the W anderers.” A visually stunning homage to spiritual pilgrimage, Songs of the W anderers weaves the story of Siddhartha’s quest for spiritual en lightenment with the language of contemporary movement. Featuring an astonishing 3 14 tons of falling, golden rice on stage, which the danc ers move through and with, it is a stirring spectacle of dance theatre. Founded in 1973 by internation ally renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-min, Cloud Gate is composed of 24 virtuoso dancers and has de veloped a reputation steeped in tra dition while also being a leader in contemporary dance.
