A new book “Portland’s Mari
time History” tells the story of how
Portland is not only the site of many
m aritim e term inals along the
Willamette and Columbia rivers, but
also home to much of America’s
maritime history.
More than 200 vintage images
illuminate Portland’s history as a port city, starting in 1840 with construc
tion of the schooner Star of Oregon. Over 100 years later, three Portland
shipyards would build 621 ships for World W ar II.
“Portland’s Maritime History” is available at area bookstores and
retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing.
