The N A ACP is calling the New
Y ear’s Day pardon o f a group of
civil rights activists known as the
W ilm ington 10, a victory for ju s
tice.
N orth C arolina Gov. Beverly
Perdue’s pardoned the group af
ter the N A ACP organized a p eti
tion that received more than 15,000
signatures.
“This pardon brings closure
to a case m arred by racism and
injustice,” said NAACP President
and CEO Benjam in Todd Jealous.
“I applaud Gov. Beverly Purdue
for her leadership in righting this
disgraceful wrong and congratu
late the N A ACP North Carolina
State Conference, NAACP m em
bers, and activists around the
country for their work to raise
aw areness about this case.”
In 1971,10 young activists, later
deem ed the W ilm ington 10, were
falsely accused and fram ed for
crim es they did not com m it. They
were convicted and sentenced to
a com bined 300 years in prison. In
1980 a federal court overturned
their convictions but the charges
rem ained on their records and their
names were never cleared.
"These young people were non
violent protestors fighting for edu
cational equality. They were framed,
wrongfully convicted and incarcer
ated” said Rev. William Barber, presi
dent of the North Carolina State
Conference of the NAACP. "These
unjust convictions were due to rac
ist manipulation of the court system
and extraordinary and blatant ra
cially motivated prosecutorial mis
conduct.”
