N orth C arolina Gov. Beverly Perdue’s pardoned the group af­ ter the N A ACP organized a p eti­ tion that received more than 15,000 signatures. “This pardon brings closure to a case m arred by racism and injustice,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjam in Todd Jealous. “I applaud Gov. Beverly Purdue for her leadership in righting this disgraceful wrong and congratu­ late the N A ACP North Carolina State Conference, NAACP m em ­ bers, and activists around the country for their work to raise aw areness about this case.” In 1971,10 young activists, later deem ed the W ilm ington 10, were falsely accused and fram ed for crim es they did not com m it. They were convicted and sentenced to a com bined 300 years in prison. In 1980 a federal court overturned their convictions but the charges rem ained on their records and their names were never cleared. "These young people were non­ violent protestors fighting for edu­ cational equality. They were framed, wrongfully convicted and incarcer­ ated” said Rev. William Barber, presi­ dent of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP.
