The leaders of African American
churches will, once again, convene
in Washington, D.C. on Inaugura­
tion Weekend to commemorate one
of the most extraordinary events in
American history - the second term
and inauguration of America’s first
president of African descent.
Attendees will gather to honor
the 44th U.S. president, Barack
Obama, and the great history and
strength of the African American
church, and its impact on the com­
munity

achievements and contributions to

A lexander is the author of The
New Jim Crow: M ass Incarcera­
tion in the Age o f Colorblindness.
She is also a professor of law at
Ohio State University.

Church Hosts
MLK Tribute
Augustana Lutheran Church,
2710N.E. 14th Ave., is hosting a
special service to honor the birth,
life and work of Dr. Martin Luther
King.
The celebration will take place
on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and
include prepared readings from
Dr. King’s speeches. There will
be jazz gospel music performed
by Marilyn Keller, Ron Steen,
Kevin Dietz, George Mitchell and
the Augustana Jazz Quartette.
The event is free and all are
welcome and wanted. For more

Luther Alvin Lockett
You make the tribute personal.
Luther Alvin Lockett of Portland passed
away peacefully on Dec. 27,2012, from a
lengthy illness. He was bom to Dillard D.
Lockett and Pearlie B. Turner in Jefferson,
Texas on April 9, 1933. Preceding him in
death were his mother, father and two older
brothers, Timothy and Thadeus Lockett.
He graduated from Lincoln High School
in Portland. He went into the military in
1954 and was honorably discharged in
1957. He retired from work at the Bonneville
Power Administration.
He is survived by his loving wife Marie
Lockett of 53 years; 4 children, Debra
(Barry), Ronald, Beverly, and Lalita
(Rodney); 5 grandchildren, LaShante, Mychal, Kris, Tamika and LaNaya;
and a host of other relatives and friends.
Luther was a faithful member and deacon of Fellowship Missionary
Baptist Church of Portland, under the direction of Dr. Johnny Pack IV for
25 years.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
