The celebration will take place on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and include prepared readings from Dr. King’s speeches. There will be jazz gospel music performed by Marilyn Keller, Ron Steen, Kevin Dietz, George Mitchell and the Augustana Jazz Quartette. The event is free and all are welcome and wanted. Luther Alvin Lockett of Portland passed away peacefully on Dec. 27,2012, from a lengthy illness. He was bom to Dillard D. Lockett and Pearlie B. Turner in Jefferson, Texas on April 9, 1933. Preceding him in death were his mother, father and two older brothers, Timothy and Thadeus Lockett. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland. He went into the military in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1957. He retired from work at the Bonneville Power Administration. He is survived by his loving wife Marie Lockett of 53 years; 4 children, Debra (Barry), Ronald, Beverly, and Lalita (Rodney); 5 grandchildren, LaShante, Mychal, Kris, Tamika and LaNaya; and a host of other relatives and friends. Luther was a faithful member and deacon of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church of Portland, under the direction of Dr. Johnny Pack IV for 25 years. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
