It’s hom ecom ing for 16 Hum boldt penguins at
the Oregon Zoo.
For much of the past two years, the penguins
shared a divided portion of the zoo’s polar bear
habitat while im provem ents were made to their
own quarters. Last week the sleek seabirds re
turned home, waddling over the fam iliar rocky
terrain and darting through the clear w ater of the
zo o 's Penguinarium .

zoo bond measure. The upgrade saves 7 million
gallons o f water each year.
Previously, a constant flow of fresh w ater was
required to keep the pool clean and free of scum
that builds up from the oils in penguin feathers.
And each week, the 25,000-gallon pool was com
pletely drained for cleaning.
Also m oving back home this m onth were 15
