For much of the past two years, the penguins shared a divided portion of the zoo’s polar bear habitat while im provem ents were made to their own quarters. Last week the sleek seabirds re­ turned home, waddling over the fam iliar rocky terrain and darting through the clear w ater of the zo o 's Penguinarium . The popular exhibit reopened to the public a fte r a m u c h -n e e d e d u p g ra d e o f th e Penguinarium ’s air conditioning system and w a te r - f iltr a tio n sy s te m , on e o f m any sustainability im provem ents funded by the 2008 zoo bond measure. The upgrade saves 7 million gallons o f water each year. Previously, a constant flow of fresh w ater was required to keep the pool clean and free of scum that builds up from the oils in penguin feathers. And each week, the 25,000-gallon pool was com ­ pletely drained for cleaning. Also m oving back home this m onth were 15 Inca terns, South Am erican seabirds that share an exhibit space with penguins at the zoo. T he T h an k sg iv in g Day event, organized by the Oregon Road Runners Club, includes a four-mile run and fitness walk, starting at 8 a.m., and ahalf-mile Tot Trot, beginning at 9:45 a.m. A portion of Turkey Trot pro­ ceeds will fund animal care and programs at the zoo. “T u rk ey T ro t is a fun, healthy and festive way to start Thanksgiving Day,” said K im S m ith , zoo d ire c to r. “People really get into the spirit of it and often show up in costum es. W e’ve had run­ ners dressed as turkeys, pil­ grim s — even E lvis.” Events are non-competitive and meant for fun, but a timing clock will be available at the finish line for participants who wish to time themselves.
