A ddy was designated by his tribe as a m aster drum m er by the age of six. A ddy's earliest m usical influence w as the traditional m usic o f the G a people, but he w as also influenced as an adolescent by popular m usic from E urope and the U nited States. H e got his p ro fessio n al start in G hana by playing w ith the Joe K elly B and, the G h a n a B ro a d c a s tin g B and, and the F arm er’s C ouncil Band, w hich played popular A m eri can and E uropean m usic and the dance m usic o f G hana know n as highlife. T he A rts C ouncil o f G hana as a G a m aster hired A ddy in 1969, and he received his first international exposure at the M unich S um m er O lym pics in 1972. H e then m oved to London and spent six years touring internationally until 1978, w hen he relocated to Portland. T here he m et and m arried his w ife Susan, w ho began m anaging his m usical career. He m aintained tw o different en sembles: O kropong, which shares traditional instrum entation, using hand and stick drum s, bells, and shak- ers to create a layered rhythm ic ef fect; and Kukrudu, an eight-piece A frican jazz group that relies on a m ix o f European and African instruments. T h ro u g h n u m e ro u s in -sc h o o l residencies, perform ances and w ork shops, A ddy affected hundreds o f thousands o f lives in the Pacific N orthw est and beyond. A d d y 's ch arism atic spirit, rapid- fire hands, and pow erful voice led him to receive the N ational H eritage Fellow ship A w ard from the National Endow m ent for the Arts under Presi dent Bill C linton, the G overnors A w ard for the A rts in O regon, The M asters F ellow ship from the R e gional A rts and C ulture C ouncil and the M asters F ellow ship from the O regon A rts C om m ission.
