The city of Beaverton invites the
community to its ninth annual Ricks
by the Fountain beginning Friday,
Aug. 3. The family-friendly outdoor
movie series will be held each Friday
night through August at Beaverton
City Park, Southwest Fifth Street
and Hall Boulevard.
"The Flicks by the Fountain se
ries has been a Beaverton favorite
for many years, " said Mayor Denny
Doyle. "Bring your family and
friends to a free movie in a beautiful
park on a warm summer night ! I can't
think of a better way to spend an
evening."
The series will open with the
movie UP, followed by The Muppets
on Aug. 10, Grease on Aug. 17, and
The Goonies on Aug. 24.

Flicks by the Fountain

The Oregon Buddhist Temple,
3720 S.E. 34th Ave., will host
Obonfest on Saturday, Aug. 4 from
3 p.m. to 9 a.m. Attendance is free of
charge and everyone is welcome.
The annual event will feature
Obon dance, taiko performances, a
Portland Shotokan Karate Do dem
onstration, children’s activities, and
talks on Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
Attendees will also find Japa
nese foods for purchase including

chirashi sushi. Spam musubi, manju,
and shave ice. The festival will have
a beer and sake garden, and non
alcoholic beverages will be for sale
as well.

community celebration returning Saturday, Aug. 4 to the Oregon
Buddhist Temple, 3720 S.E. 34th Ave.
Japanese goods and services will
include Oshie art with chiyogami
paper, Shiatsu massage, pottery,
handmade purses, meditation prod
ucts, books, music, T-shirts and
other items.
Obonfest is a summertime Japa
nese festival commemorating one's
ancestors. In their honor, lanterns
are hung, Obon dance is performed,
memorial visits are made, and food
is offered at house altars and temples.
