On Dec. 4, 1956, an auspicious twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley together. The place was Sun R ecords’ storefront stu dio in M em phis, Tenn. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father o f Rock ‘n ’ R oll,’’ who discovered them all. The four young m usi cians united for the only tim e in their careers for an im prom ptu re cording that has come to be known as one o f the greatest rock ‘n ’ roll jam sessions o f all time.
