Freeway neither boastfully brags about his days hustling on the crime-ridden street comers of North Philly, nor does he dogmatically preach at his listeners while lecturing them to live righteously. Instead, his lyrics are laced with ghetto-weary "been there, done that" sentiment that implies there is life beyond the block. The hip hop star will perform Saturday, April 14 at 9:30 p.m. at the Crown Room, 205 N.W. On Thursday, the parks bureau teamed with its partners to host informational booths in the South Parks Block, downtown, on the ben efits of trees, what’s happening to help manage and maintain the urban forest, and ways for citizens to be come involved. The PP&R urban forestry crew took people high in the sky in a bucket truck to get a squirrel’s-eye- view of the urban forest. Children of all ages learned about the life cycle of a tree from exploring the germination of a seed and dis covering the structure of a mature tree, to dissecting a rotten log. The Portland Urban Forestry Commission presented Bill Naito Community Tree Awards to three winners. Bob Naito, son of noted community leader Bill Naito, pre sented the awards. Bill Naito rarely missed an Urban Forestry C om m ission m eeting, which he founded in 1974 and chaired until his death. Through his humor, persistence, and imagina tive approach to projects, he in spired many individuals to recog nize the beauty trees bring to our city. and So Much More “If You Can Think It, I Can Create It. ” Showdogs, Phyllis Reynolds accepts a Bill Naito Community Tree Award Natio's son, Bob Naito during an Arbor Day celebration on Thursday.
