Letter Carriers Celebrate

gathering of local African-American
letter carriers, with plans to make Black
History Month an annual celebration
for the group.

The postal
employees had
a
potluck
brunch and
in postal history was William H. Carney, a
letter carrier in New Bedford, Mass, from
1869 to 1901.
Carney was also the first African Ameri
can to earn the Congressional Medal of
Honor. He was awarded the medal for the
bravery he displayed in the Civil War as a
soldier in Company C of the 54th Massachu
setts Colored Infantry.
