“School taught me the basics,
and the m ajority o f the technical
things,” she said. “ But every day I
teach m y self and continue to e d u
cate m y self on different techniques
and w ays to create designs.”
N ow , four years since her g rad u
ation from A m erican Inter-Continen
tal U niversity, she is w orking on her
third fashions collection, w hich has
m ade it very clear, the risk was w orth
taking.
“ I have been to show s during New
York Fashion W eek, but I have never
show n there,” said Page. “This is a
first, and really a dream -com e true.”
In 2010, she w as aw arded as the
em erging designer o f the y ear at
C harleston Fashion W eek for her
collection M iam i Beach-C irca 1950,
w hich w as her first show ing o f her
original work.
“N o m atter w hat obstacles you
feel are in y our w ay, you need to
pursue w hatever it is that is your
d ream ,” said Page. “ I believe that
w hen you pursue w hatever your
dream is, opportunities arrive.”
C urrently, she is w orking on her
third collection Spring Breeze, which
will be show n in N ew Y ork on Sept.
10. H er inspiration for her new work,
she said, com es from the feeling you
get w hen spring finally arrives.
“ It is a beautiful feeling,” she
said. "T he sky is beautiful and there
are so m any w onderful aro m as.”
Being raised as an A frican A m eri
can and in Portland, she said, has
also played a pivotal role in the
grow ing success and inspiration o f
h er brand.
“G row ing up in Portland, w here
everything is so free-spirited, d efi
nitely affected m y designs because
I use an editing eye, w here ev ery
thing is very m odest, w earable, fash
ion forw ard and body flattering,”
she said.
A ccording to Page, som e ch al
lenges surround the b elief by people
w ithin society that fashion is only
m . y F A T H
com ing from those w ith a certain
ethnicity or background. “ It is ju st
a fact that there are not a lot o f
A frican A m ericans in the fashion
industry m aking a big nam e for them
selves,” she said. “ In som e w ays
you d o n 't necessarily have the sam e
o p p o rtu n ities.”
She said, how ever, this d o e sn ’t
hold her back.
“G row ing up in Portland d efi
nitely instilled the confidence in me
to know my race is no different from
any o th er race,” she said. “ So I go
fo r the sam e opportunities anyone
is presented w ith in order to pursue
m y d ream s.”
This Saturday, A ug. 6, Page in
vites the public to attend a cocktail
event tol help raise funds to send
h er team to go to fashion w eek in
New York.
“W ith Portland behind me, it re
ally pushes me to continue and see
that this brand succeed,” she said.
“ W hen you do try to pursue to do
w hatever you want to do, opportuni
ties will find you, and doors will open.”
