Michelle Fujii, a fourth generation
Japanese-American and the artistic
director of Portland Taiko, as well as a
Japanese folk dancer, composer, and
choreographer, presents “Choking,”
at the Ethos at Interstate Firehouse
Cultural Center, 5340 N. Interstate Ave.
Fujii reveals elements of her per
sonal artistic journey, motivations and
family history in the solo performance
that waves taiko, dance and video,
and delves into Fujii’s continual ex
plorations to place “traditional” Japa
nese art within the present.
“Michelle has created a perfor
mance with depth and intensity. She
has managed to weave elements of her
personal journey together with a his
torical narrative of the Japanese-Ameri
can experience and taiko," says Kisha
X. Palmer, directorial collaborator.
The 2nd floor of IFCC will be trans
formed with installations that reflect
the influences that have developed
Fujii’s identity as a 4th generation
Japanese-American, a daughter, and
granddaughter of incarcerated Japa
nese-Americans during World War II.
Only 70 tickets are available per
nightly show between the two entry
times to ensure an intimate and unique
experience.
Shows are scheduled at 8:30 p.m. on
Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and Aug.
6 and again next weekend on Aug. 12
and 13. The IFCC will open the second
floor interactive gallery at 7:45 p.m. on Japanese-American folk dancer, com poser and choreographer
each night the performances.
