Keeping Faith on Civil, Labor Rights
President Obama met Friday at
the White House with eight partici
pants in the 1968 Memphis sanita
tion strike, an iconic campaign in
civil rights and labor rights history,
when public workers banded to
gether for dignity, respect and a
better life.
Forty-three years ago. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. and leaders of the
civil rights movement joined these
men on the picket line, recognizing
that economic justice and social
justice are part of the same aspira
tion for human dignity.
The President invited the living
participants in the Memphis sanita
tion strike to honor their courage,
and their fight on behalf of all work
ers for safe conditions, respect in
the workplace and a better life for
themselves and their families.
As workers across the country
continue to face challenges to their
rights, the issues for which these
men fought continue to be relevant

For the past two years the City of
Beaverton has partnered with the Fair
Housing Council of Oregon to complete
random audits of rental units that have
revealed housing discrimination.
However, the most recent audit found
a smaller amount of housing discrimina
tion in Beaverton compared to the previ
ous year’s audit results. Thirty-seven
percent of the 2010 audits resulted in a
positive folding for discriminatory treat
ment, compared to 48 percent of tests
completed in 2009.
Most striking was a decrease in dis
crimination based on race (25 percent for
2010 versus 78 percent for 2009). Rental
units were also tested for discrimination
based on national origin, the presence of
children, sexual orientation and disability.
Andrea Nelson, the city’s community
development block grant coordinator, said
Beaverton officials are committed to work
ing with members of the housing commu
nity to see even more improvement.”
“Discrimination in housing is not
something that we can address alone; we
want to hear from community members
who have ideas about how we can elimi
nate housing discrimination in our com
munity,” she said.
The next meeting will be held on May
25 at Beaverton City Hall and is open to
the public.
