Keeping Faith on Civil, Labor Rights President Obama met Friday at the White House with eight partici­ pants in the 1968 Memphis sanita­ tion strike, an iconic campaign in civil rights and labor rights history, when public workers banded to­ gether for dignity, respect and a better life. Forty-three years ago. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and leaders of the civil rights movement joined these men on the picket line, recognizing that economic justice and social justice are part of the same aspira­ tion for human dignity. The President invited the living participants in the Memphis sanita­ tion strike to honor their courage, and their fight on behalf of all work­ ers for safe conditions, respect in the workplace and a better life for themselves and their families. However, the most recent audit found a smaller amount of housing discrimina­ tion in Beaverton compared to the previ­ ous year’s audit results. Thirty-seven percent of the 2010 audits resulted in a positive folding for discriminatory treat­ ment, compared to 48 percent of tests completed in 2009. Most striking was a decrease in dis­ crimination based on race (25 percent for 2010 versus 78 percent for 2009). Rental units were also tested for discrimination based on national origin, the presence of children, sexual orientation and disability. Andrea Nelson, the city’s community development block grant coordinator, said Beaverton officials are committed to work­ ing with members of the housing commu­ nity to see even more improvement.” “Discrimination in housing is not something that we can address alone; we want to hear from community members who have ideas about how we can elimi­ nate housing discrimination in our com­ munity,” she said. The next meeting will be held on May 25 at Beaverton City Hall and is open to the public.
