event at City Hall.

Ujamaa, the fourth of seven prin­
ciples of Kwanzaa which focuses
on Cooperative Economics: To build
and maintain our own stores, shops,
and other businesses and to profit
from them together.
The free and open to the public
event will feature drum m ing by
Art A lexander and Caton, music
by DJ Calvin Kyles, spoken word
recitations by Renee M itchell and
Antoinette Edwards, catering by
Le Sous Chef, M uffin Batiste, and
a libation cerem ony by Joyce
Harris.
The celebration takes place on
Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 5 p.m. to
7 p.m. in the City Hall Atrium.
Kwanzaa, the African American
and Pan African holiday, is cel­
ebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan, 1.
Rooted in the first harvest festivi­
ties of Africa, Kwanzaa is derived
from the Swahili phrase “matunda
ya wanza” meaning “first fruits,”
and began in the U. S. as a weeklong
celebration of family, community
and culture.
