Why do you think, act, or look the way you do? How do others affect who you are? Learn the an swers to these questions and the reasons why you became who you are in the Oregon Museum o f S c ie n c e an d In d u s try ’s (OMSI) new exhibit, Identity: An Exhibition o f You. Identity explores the physical, psychological, and social ele ments in your life that make you tick and challenges our notions o f personal identity. The exhibit uses the familiar— our body, our thoughts, our relationships— to make connections with the sci entific— our genes, our brains. Identity is a hands-on, highly interactive exhibit that presents your own identity front and cen ter while you learn about genet ics and biological identity, cogni tive science and psychology, personality, and social science and racial and ethnic identity. The exhibit features three main areas associated with aspects of identity: Physical, where we con nect our body with our genes; psychological, where our thoughts connect to our brains; and social, where our relationships connect with our roles in society. By playing the game "Family Match-Up" you will find out who belongs in which family, or you can step into a booth to look at your future self and see how the choices you make today can impact your identity tomorrow. You can explore how smells tell you something about your self, or "hear" your personality in an open-ended musical art piece. You will also learn about the differences gender brings to your brain, beginning in the womb. If you take a spin on the "Who Shares Your Skin" wheel, you will see who else in the world sharesj/our skin color, and then take a digital photo o f yourself and change your gender and ethnicity on a computer.
