Data Stolen in Car Break-In PCC issues warning alert A car owned by an employee of Portland Community College was broken into on Thursday, Aug 5. Among the stolen items was a data storage device co n tain in g the names and Social Security numbers o f an estimated 2,900 Multnomah County participants in the Oregon Food Stamp Employment Transi tion Program, also known as OFSET. “We have sent out letters to all of the participants,” said Wing-Kit Chung, college vice president for administrative services. “So far, there is no indication at this point that any ofthe personal information in question has been accessed by anyone outside the college.” The program provides support services and job-search training for unemployed Oregonians. It is spon sored by the Oregon Department o f Human Services and is served by PCC. The college has taken the lead in informing the program partici pants. An article has been posted at pcc.edu with further information for participants. The article includes contact numbers for credit-moni toring agencies and information re garding a credit-protection service PCC is offering to the participants o f the program. But a recent example shows how consum ers should be on the lookout for one version that appears to have ties to Washington. The letter has a fax number with a Washington area code and the envelope was postmarked in Seattle with no return address. However, the call-back number is from British Columbia, Canada. To appear legitimate, fake letters sometimes use well known busi- ness logos or misuse BBB's logo to falsely imply BBB accreditation. The real Reader's Digest does have a real sweepstakes; however, scam artists frequently imperson ate them. Never forward money to receive sweepstakes winnings. Scams may ask for a credit card or bank account number, check, money order, wired money or other finances in order to pay for taxes, fees, shipping or other bogus reasons. In legitimate cases any fees would be taken out before winnings are received and taxes would be filed with tax returns to the IRS.
