Every fall, the dead are com-
memorated in a lively show of
dance, m usic and th e a tre in
Portland's longest-running Day
of the Dead celebration.
This year’s show, hosted by
Milagro Theater, 525 S.E. Stark St.,
features the signature carpa — a
wildly popular and irreverent
vaudeville that marches to the heat
of a new drummer,
The original bilingual produc-
tion is written by Martin Milago
and directed by Drammy winner
Philip Cuomo. Shows are playing
through Sunday, Nov. 9. Purchase

on Halloween and on Satur-
day, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov.
2. An artists' reception will
take place on Last Thursday,
Oct. 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Another major Day of the
Dead group show will take
place at Guardino Gallery,
2939 N.E. Alberta St.
A procession commemorat­
ing the holiday will also take
place on Last Thursday. Sev­
eral Day of the Dead altars
will also be built - one in the
patio in back of Onda and one
in the parking lot in back of
Guardino.
Day of the Dead traditions
include building private altars
honoring the deceased, using
sugar skulls, marigolds, and the
favorite foods and beverages
of the departed, and visiting
graves with these as gifts.
