Study Finds Some Need Smaller Stomachs
Reveals benefit in bariatric surgery
(A P )— M orbidly obese patients
who undergo w eight-loss surgery
greatly reduce their risk of cancer,
according to a new study on health
benefits from these increasingly
com m on operations.
Researchers from McGill Univer
sity in M ontreal found that the
people who underw ent bariatric
surgery saw reductions in particu
lar in the risk for breast and colon
cancer. M any people see dram atic
w eight loss after such surgery.
People who are deemed morbidly
obese typically are at least 100
pounds overw eight. The research
ers tracked 1,035 such patients who
had bariatric surgery for five years.
They also monitored 5,746 patients
who m atched the surgery group in
age, sex and w eight but did not

70 percent, those who underwent
bariatric surgery also saw reduc

searchers said.
The study buttresses findings
published last year in the New En
gland Journal o f M edicine that
obese people who have bariatric
surgery have a low er risk o f death
from heart disease, diabetes as well
as cancer com pared to obese people
who do not have such surgery.
