Study Finds Some Need Smaller Stomachs Reveals benefit in bariatric surgery (A P )— M orbidly obese patients who undergo w eight-loss surgery greatly reduce their risk of cancer, according to a new study on health benefits from these increasingly com m on operations. Researchers from McGill Univer­ sity in M ontreal found that the people who underw ent bariatric surgery saw reductions in particu­ lar in the risk for breast and colon cancer. M any people see dram atic w eight loss after such surgery. People who are deemed morbidly obese typically are at least 100 pounds overw eight. The research­ ers tracked 1,035 such patients who had bariatric surgery for five years. They also monitored 5,746 patients who m atched the surgery group in age, sex and w eight but did not percent and colon cancer by about 70 percent, those who underwent bariatric surgery also saw reduc­ tions in the risk for pancreatic can­ cer, skin cancer, uterine cancer and non-H odgkin’s lym phom a, the re­ searchers said. The study buttresses findings published last year in the New En­ gland Journal o f M edicine that obese people who have bariatric surgery have a low er risk o f death from heart disease, diabetes as well as cancer com pared to obese people who do not have such surgery.
