Oregon C ity 6.3-56 late Saturday night to
claim the O S A A Class 6 A boys basketball
Oregon C ity, w hich snapped an 18-game
w inning streak.
The Pioneers (28-2), appearing in their
first title game since 1945, were ranked No.
I all season. The Generals (22-6(didn't trail
after the first quarter and led by as many
as nine points m idway through the fourth.
Oregon C ity stormed back behind their
tw o star players, Tinsley and Schafer, w ho
brought the Pioneers w ith in one at 57-56
title at M c A rth u r Court.
Michael James added 17 points and
Paul M cC oy had 13 fo r the Generals, who
staved o ff the Pioneers' late rally.
Brad Tinsley scored a game-high 30
points and Sammy Schafer added 2 1 for
photo in
w ith I :()2 left.
But M cC oy shut down Tinsley and
Grant hit all four o f its free throws in the
final minute. James grabbed a long defen­
sive rebound and sprinted all alone to the
other end, capping the game w ith an em­
phatic dunk.
Grant students mobbed the court in
celebration o f the school's first state cham­
pionship since 1988.

championship by the Jefferson girls, also in
Class 5A.
A t the boys final in Eugene Saturday,
Terrance Jones added 11 points for the
Democrats (24-1), which lost the lead in the
fourth quarter before holding on in the final
minutes.
The Democrats were playing in their first
championship game since winning the 4A
title in 2000. It was their fourth state title
overall and second under coach Marshall
Haskins.
Last season Jefferson was knocked out
o f the tournament in the quarterfinals by
Corvallis.
Nadav Heyman, the tw o-tim e M id -
W illam ette Conference player o f the year
fo r C orvallis, was held scoreless in the
firs t half. The senior guard missed on his
o n ly three attempts.
Back-to-back baskets by N ick Eason
got the Spartans to w ithin 36-30 midway
through the third, but Terrance Ross an­
swered fo r the Democrats with a pair o f
jumpers and Jefferson t<x>k a43-26 advan­
tage into the fourth quarter.

" It shows we can succeed in all things, so
i f we can excel ill sports, we can do it in
academics as w e ll."
