A t the boys final in Eugene Saturday, Terrance Jones added 11 points for the Democrats (24-1), which lost the lead in the fourth quarter before holding on in the final minutes. The Democrats were playing in their first championship game since winning the 4A title in 2000. It was their fourth state title overall and second under coach Marshall Haskins. Last season Jefferson was knocked out o f the tournament in the quarterfinals by Corvallis. Nadav Heyman, the tw o-tim e M id - W illam ette Conference player o f the year fo r C orvallis, was held scoreless in the firs t half. The senior guard missed on his o n ly three attempts. Back-to-back baskets by N ick Eason got the Spartans to w ithin 36-30 midway through the third, but Terrance Ross an­ swered fo r the Democrats with a pair o f jumpers and Jefferson tk a43-26 advan­ tage into the fourth quarter.
