Sly, Artful and Hilarious
Pinocchio brings puppet to life
A sly, artful and hilarious production of
Pinocchio takes the stage this month thanks
to Tears of Joy Theatre.
Jon Ludwig's adoption of the classic tale
dejights with the antics of the little wooden
puppet who comes nose-to-wooden nose
with some delightful characters: Fire Eater,
the Blue Fairy, talking donkeys, the ill-fated
Lampwick and a magical penguin.
When Pinocchio finally frees himself from
his masters, he can pursue the hope of
becoming real.
Made possible by a grant from the Jim
Henson Foundation, Pinocchio features an
ornate set that recalls traveling puppet the­
atres of old Italy in the 1880s.
Performances begin Friday, Nov. 9 at
7:30 p.m. at the Winningstad Theatre, Port­
land Center for the Performing Arts, 1111
S.W. Broadway, and repeat on Saturday,
Nov. I Oat 10 am.; Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 and
4 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m.; Sun­
day, Nov. 18 at 2 and 4 p.m.; Saturday, Nov.
24 at I I a.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 and
4 p.m. One show will be held Saturday, Dec.
1 at 1 I a.m. at Royal Durst Theatre, 3103
Main St. in Vancouver.

Dancers to Make Portland Debut

Based in Montreal. Canada, Coleman Lemieux
& Compagnie will make their Portland debut
Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Arlene
Sehnitzer Concert Hall.
The group of immensely talented and deeply
committed performers are centered around the
partnership of internationally acclaimed chore­
ographers Bill Coleman and Laurence Lemieux.
This extraordinary company, comprised of 11 of
Canada's finest dancers, will make its Portland
debut with a program highlighting the work of
James Kudelka, former artistic director of the
National Ballet of Canada.
Recognized as one of North America's fore­
most dance artists. Kudelka is rare in his ability
to blend classical and modem-dance forms. The
evening will feature Kudelka’s “Fifteen Hetero­
sexual Duets,” a hit of New York's Fall for
