Rappin’ fora Reason
Concert promotes youth
advocacy in Africa
The Dead Prez will be in Portland rappin' for
a reason as part of the African Youth Initiative
Network. The socially conscious duo will per­
form Saturday, May 26 at the Wonder Ball­
room, 128 N.E. Russell St. Doors open at 7 p.m.
with the concert scheduled for 8 p.m.
Proceeds and other fundraising efforts will
pay for the shipment of computers to the Afri­
can countries of Rwanda and Burundi.
The youth network is a partnering program
of Global Family Network, which was founded
earlier this year by Portlander's Mic Crenshaw
and Morgan Delany. The organization has al­
ready received a computer grant from Fee
Intercultural Fun - Wednes­
day, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. to 9
p.m..the Center for Intercultural Or­
ganizing will host a ‘funny-raiser’ at the
Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, 5340 N. Inter­
state Ave. The event includes a reception, silent
auction, film screening and various comedians. Tick­

M ississippi Studios - Portland's genteel gentlemen
of world chamber music, 3 Leg Torso, will perform
with special guest Buoy LaRue for two shows at
Mississippi Studios. 3939 N. Mississippi Ave., on
Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. and 10p.m. Admission is
$ 15 for patrons 2 1 and over.
C om m unity D ance Party - Dance yourself ecstatic
with the African Marimba band Wood Vibrations,
playing Saturday, May I9from 8to 11 p.m.at Hipbone
Studios, 1847 E. Burnside, Suite 104. The ensemble
plays for the sheer joy of the music. Their first love is
the traditional Shona-slyle marimba music o f Zimba­
bwe, but they also play songs from other parts of the
world.
Disability Festival - Friday. May 18 through Sunday,
May 20th. the Central Lutheran Church, 1820 N.E. 2 1
Ave., hosts a festival of workshops; bringing to-
Geek and laptops from CTL.

hitting style and political active lyrics, focusing on
racism, critical pedagogy, religion, activism against
governmental hypocrisy and corporate control
over the media, especially hip-hop record labels.
The benefit concert will also showcase other
Portland rap acts including Cool N ut/and Hungry
Mob. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the
