photojournalism
exhibits open
Friday
By now, the story of Sept. 11,
2001 has been etched into our col
lective memory, but lew have seen
New York from the perspective of
Magnum photographers.
Eleven members of the legend
ary photo agency immediately dis
persed from their monthly meeting
in New York as the events unfolded
to document the incomprehensible.
“New York, Sept. 11” consists of
37 color and black and white photo
graphs that are by turns haunting,
surreal and breathtaking. The tour
opens Friday, March 2 and runs
through May 26 at the Oregon His
torical Society.
Organized by International Arts
& Artists, Washington, D.C., the
tour is one two photo exhibits the
museum is featuring on the 9-11
attack during the next several weeks.
Photographer Nathan Lyons,
known for his honest and often
questioning depictions of Ameri
can culture, is featured in the other
tour, creating his own poignant
sequence of images in response to
the events of Sept. 11.
