An engaging perform ance art ist, M itchell recently perf orm ed her poetry with a six-piece band that included relocated m usicians from New O rleans. A s a p a rt o f M itc h e ll’s w o m e n ’s em pow erm ent project, she also published a book o f poetry, re leased a C D o f her poetry set to music and finished her first novel. “ I am honored to receive this amazing award.” says Mitchell, who is also a publisher, playw right, col lege professor, jew elry m aker and single m other o f three children. “If w omen need to hear my story to have the courage to tell their own, then so be it. W ith G o d ’s help, let healing begin with my shoulder.” Em otional and verbal abuse is a pattern o f behavior com m itted by one partner against the other with the goal o f exerting and m aintain ing power. For the victim , it saps their energy, com prom ises their health and erodes their self-esteem.
