First, we m ust Can a global corporation make a différence in our community? m assively assert o ur d ig n ity a n d worth. We m ust sta n d up a m id a system that still oppresses us a n d develop an unassailable and m ajestic sense o f values. We m ust no longer be a sh a m ed o f being black. The jo b o f arousing m anhood w ithin a p eo p le that have been taught f o r so m any centuries that they are nobody is not easy. Even semantics have conspired to make that which is black seem ugly and degrading. In R o g et’s Thesaurus there are som e 120 synonym s fo r blackness and at least sixty o f them are offensive, such words as blot, soot, grim, devil, and foul. A nd there are some 134 synonym s fo r whiteness and all are favorable, expressed in such words as purity, cleanliness, chastity, and innocence. A white lie is better than a black lie. The m ost degenerate m em ber o f a fa m ily is the “black sheep. ” Ossie Davis has suggested that maybe the English language should be reconstructed so that teachers will not be fo rced to teach the Negro child sixty ways to despise himself, and thereby perpetuate his fa lse sense o f inferiority, and the white child 134 ways to adore himself, and thereby perpetuate bis fa lse sense o f superiority. Psychological freedom , a firm sense o f self-esteem, is the most powerful weapon against the long night o f physical slavery. No Lincolnian Emancipation Proclamation, no Johnsonian civil rights bill can totally bring this kind o f freedom.
