Ray Charles Post Office Named

neighborhood near his recording
studio during an Aug. 24 cerem ony
christening a post office in his name.
“ M y hopes are that the nam ing
o f this post office facility is only the
first o f m any tributes for a man who
started from now here to end up a
national treasure and global phe­
n o m e n o n ,” s a id R e p . D ia n e
W atson, D -C alif., w ho sponsored
the federal bill to renam e the post
office.
Charles died in June 2004o f acute
liver disease at age 73. His death
ended a 5X-year career in w hich he
com bined rock ‘n ’ roll w ith gospel
and soul to create a new style for
hits such as “W h a t'd I Say,” “ Hit
the Road Jack,” “G eorgia on My
M ind” and “ I C an ’t Stop Loving
You.”
Born Ray C harles Robinson, he
lost his eyesight at 7, w as an or­
phan at 15 and struggled for nearly
